Twenty minutes is short enough to fit into most days.
That is one reason walking can be so useful.
A 20-minute walk after lunch, around your Windsor or Tecumseh neighbourhood, through a shopping centre in bad weather, or after dinner may not feel like a major workout.
Do it every day, however, and you accumulate 140 minutes of activity per week.
That is only ten minutes short of the standard recommendation that adults perform at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. But the reason is not that every 20-minute walk burns exactly 100 calories, floods the brain with “feel-good hormones,” strengthens every bone, improves digestion, and raises your metabolism for the rest of the day.
The evidence is more specific.
And more useful.
Why Twenty Minutes Is A Good Starting Point
Exercise advice often fails because the starting point is too ambitious.
An inactive person hears that adults should get 150 minutes of aerobic exercise and immediately imagines five demanding 30-minute workouts.
Walking gives you another option.
A 20-minute daily walk equals:

Add a ten-minute walk somewhere in the week and you reach 150.

How Brisk Does Walking Need To Be?
You do not need a complicated heart-rate formula.
Try the talk test.
During moderate-intensity activity:
- Your breathing should be noticeably faster
- Your heart rate should rise
- You should still be able to speak
- Carrying on a long song would be harder
The pace required to reach that intensity varies.
An older adult or someone starting from a very low fitness level may reach it at a slower walking speed.
A trained runner may need hills or a very brisk pace.
Your body determines the intensity, not the speed displayed on someone else’s treadmill.
Walking More Is Associated With Lower Mortality Risk
Step-count research also supports the value of becoming less sedentary.

Still, they undermine the popular idea that you must reach exactly 10,000 steps before walking “counts.”
More activity than you currently do can matter.
Benefit 2: Walking Can Be Good For Mental Health
A walk can provide a change of environment, time away from screens, physical exertion, and a mental break.
Clinical research also supports walking as a legitimate physical-activity intervention for mental health.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 75 randomized controlled trials involving 8,636 participants.

The usual explanation is that exercise “releases endorphins.”
That may be part of the physiology.
It is not the complete explanation.
The mental-health effects of physical activity may involve interactions between:

- Routine
- Social contact
- Behavioural activation
- Time outside
- Improved physical health
There is no need to reduce all of that to one hormone.

Walking burns energy.

But a 20-minute walk does not always burn 100 calories.

But an ordinary 20-minute walk does not meaningfully transform your resting metabolism for the rest of the day.
The important effect is cumulative.
Twenty minutes today.
Twenty tomorrow.
Repeated over months.

Walking trains walking.
That may sound obvious, but it matters.

What About Bone Strength?
