The Real Reason You Feel Taller After an Adjustment

You stand up after an adjustment and something feels different.

Your back moves more easily.

You feel less guarded.

You catch yourself standing a little more upright.

Maybe you even think:

“Did I just get taller?”

Probably not in any permanent sense.

But the sensation is not necessarily imaginary either.

Your height naturally changes throughout the day, and one small randomized trial has actually measured an immediate increase in stature after a particular spinal manipulation.

That does not mean chiropractic care can increase your adult height.

It does mean the familiar “I feel taller” comment has a more interesting explanation than simply dismissing it.

Adults Are Not Exactly The Same Height All Day

Measure yourself carefully after waking and again later in the day and you may get different numbers.

The main reason is the spine.

Intervertebral discs contain substantial water and respond to mechanical loading. During normal upright activity, disc dimensions change and overall stature decreases slightly. During unloading and sleep, some of that change reverses. (PubMed)

One study of 34 adults measured average daytime height losses of 6.9 mm in men and 7.4 mm in women across approximately seven hours. (PubMed)

Another longitudinal observation recorded an average daily change of about 1.4 cm in one adult. (PubMed)

So the commonly repeated idea that adults can vary by around a centimetre across a day is plausible.

But the amount differs between individuals.

Your Bones Are Not Shrinking Every Afternoon

It is more accurate to talk about changes in disc and soft-tissue dimensions than vertebrae being crushed by gravity.

MRI research has shown that lumbar disc height and volume decrease after prolonged upright loading. (PubMed)

That process is normal.

Walking, standing, sitting, and carrying things all place load through the spine.

Overnight, unloading allows fluid redistribution.

A daily height change is therefore not evidence that gravity is damaging your spine and not evidence that you need an adjustment to restore what was lost.

Can One Adjustment Change Your Measured Height?

There is some evidence that it can, at least immediately and in a very specific population.

A 2014 randomized, double-blind controlled trial included 40 men with L5-S1 degenerative disc disease and low back pain.

Half received one lumbosacral high-velocity, low-amplitude manipulation.

Half received a placebo intervention.

Immediately afterward, the manipulation group demonstrated statistically significant improvements in:

  • Measured full height
  • Self-reported low back pain
  • Spinal flexion mobility
  • Hip flexion during a straight-leg-raise test

That is probably the best direct evidence supporting the idea behind this article.

It also needs to be interpreted carefully.

What The Study Did Not Show

The trial did not demonstrate that:

  • Chiropractic care permanently makes adults taller
  • Every adjustment increases height
  • Women experience the same effect
  • Computerized adjusting produces the same effect
  • Multiple treatments progressively add height
  • Degenerative discs were regenerated
  • Vertebral bones moved permanently farther apart
  • Improved height persisted long term

The researchers only examined the immediate response after one specific lumbosacral manipulation in 40 men. They explicitly recommended future research involving women and longer-term outcomes. (PubMed)

So the study is interesting.

It is not a chiropractic height-growth study.

Why Might Height Change Immediately?

The trial cannot tell us exactly which mechanism produced the stature change.

Several factors may be relevant.

Pain decreased.

Spinal movement increased.

The treatment mechanically loaded the lumbosacral region.

The participants may also have stood differently after treatment.

A person’s measured height can change slightly with posture, spinal loading, and disc dimensions.

It would therefore be too strong to claim that the manipulation proved the vertebrae had been permanently separated.

A more accurate conclusion is:

A specific spinal manipulation produced a small immediate measurable change in stature alongside other short-term musculoskeletal changes.

Feeling Taller And Being Taller Are Different Outcomes

Suppose you arrive with back pain and stand in a somewhat guarded position.

After treatment, standing upright feels easier.

You may suddenly feel “longer” through the torso.

That subjective experience could be much larger than any measurable change on a stadiometer.

That is fine.

Pain changes how people move.

When pain decreases, movement behaviour can change quickly.

The clinical outcome that matters is not whether your height increased by a few millimetres.

It is whether you can move and function more comfortably.

The Astronaut Comparison Is Real, But Misleading

Astronauts genuinely become taller in space.

NASA reports that crewmembers can increase their stature by as much as approximately 3% while exposed to microgravity. (NASA)

Research attributes this to spinal elongation in the absence of normal gravitational compression, including straightening of spinal curves and changes in intervertebral discs and body fluids. (NASA Technical Reports Server)

NASA also notes that astronauts return toward their previous height once they return to Earth’s gravity. (NASA)

But an astronaut floating in microgravity for months is not experiencing the same thing as a patient receiving a brief spinal adjustment.

Microgravity continuously changes the loading environment.

An adjustment applies a brief mechanical input.

The NASA finding supports the principle that spinal loading affects stature.

It does not validate the claim that chiropractic manipulation reproduces microgravity.

Do Adjustments Decompress Your Discs?

This depends on what “decompress” means.

A spinal manipulation certainly changes mechanical forces in the area being treated.

Laboratory research has demonstrated temporary intradiscal pressure changes during particular manipulation techniques. A 2024 in-vitro cervical study, for example, found reductions in intradiscal pressure during rotation-traction manipulation. (PubMed)

That does not establish that an ordinary chiropractic adjustment:

  • Permanently widens a disc space
  • Produces sustained negative pressure
  • Pulls a herniated disc back into place
  • Rehydrates a degenerated disc
  • Restores normal disc structure

Biomechanical effects during a treatment and long-term tissue changes are different questions.

What Does “Negative Pressure” Actually Refer To?

Negative intradiscal pressure has been directly measured during some traction-based decompression procedures.

A classic study measured pressure inside lumbar discs while patients were treated on a vertebral axial decompression table. Greater traction forces reduced intradiscal pressure, with pressure reaching negative values at higher tensions. (PubMed)

That is a finding about sustained mechanical traction.

It should not simply be copied into an explanation of manual or computerized chiropractic adjusting.

Different treatments apply different forces for different lengths of time.

They need evidence specific to the intervention being discussed.

Computerized Adjusting Is Not A Height-Enhancement Technology

What Happens To Your Discs During A Normal Day?

Disc fluid behaviour is frequently misunderstood.

Intervertebral discs are hydrated tissues.

When subjected to prolonged loading, fluid can shift out of the tissue and disc height can decrease.

When loading is reduced, fluid can return.

An in-vivo MRI study found significant reductions in lumbar disc dimensions after several hours of upright activity. (PubMed)

Another study linked MRI-measured changes in lumbar dimensions with measurable stature loss after a loading task. (PubMed)

This is a normal load-response cycle.

The discs are not simply “deflating” in a pathological sense every day.

Do Chiropractic Adjustments Rehydrate Discs?

There is not sufficient evidence to make that clinical claim.

The fact that discs contain water does not prove that an intervention rehydrates them.

Likewise, an immediate increase in standing height does not demonstrate increased disc health.

A 2024 case report used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate biochemical changes in one patient after spinal manipulation, but isolated case evidence cannot establish disc regeneration as an expected chiropractic outcome. (PubMed)

When chiropractic care is used for back pain, progress should be measured by outcomes such as pain, disability, movement, and activity.

Not an assumed change in disc hydration.

Does Slouching Make You Permanently Shorter?

Not in the way commonly implied.

If you stand in a flexed or slumped position, your vertical height at that moment is lower.

Straighten your trunk and your measured height can increase.

That does not mean slouching shortened your bones.

Likewise, years of computer work do not necessarily “stunt” an adult’s natural height.

There are medical reasons adults can lose height over time, including vertebral compression fractures, osteoporosis, and substantial structural spinal changes.

Ordinary day-to-day posture should not be placed in the same category.

Is There One Correct Spinal Curvature?

No.

Normal spinal curves vary between individuals.

The objective of musculoskeletal care should not automatically be to make everyone’s X-ray or posture look identical.

A person can stand differently because of:

  • Anatomy
  • Pain
  • Habit

  • Fatigue
  • Work demands
  • Sport
  • Comfort

Treatment may help someone move more comfortably or tolerate upright activity better.

Why “Standing Straighter” Can Still Be A Useful Outcome

  • Weakness
  • Reflex changes

That is neurological disease.

It is different from saying an asymptomatic vertebral “misalignment” interferes with generalized nerve flow to the body.

Chiropractic care should be connected to the specific musculoskeletal or neurological presentation being treated.

What Are The Realistic Benefits Of Spinal Manipulation?

Spinal manipulation is one conservative treatment option for selected musculoskeletal conditions.

WHO’s guideline for chronic primary low back pain states that spinal manipulative therapy may be offered as part of care, although the recommendation is conditional and the certainty of evidence is very low. (Iris)

That supports cautious claims involving:

  • Pain
  • Function
  • Mobility
  • Return to activity

It does not support claims involving:

  • Permanent height gain
  • Universal posture correction
  • Improved digestion
  • Better breathing through nerve flow
  • Whole-body nervous-system optimization

The treatment goal should match the evidence.

Is Height A Good Measure Of Chiropractic Progress?

Usually not.

If your treatment began because you had low back pain, progress should probably be measured using things related to low back pain.

  • Pain intensity
  • Disability
  • Walking tolerance
  • Work ability
  • Strength
  • Range of motion when relevant
  • Return to exercise
  • Frequency and severity of flare-ups

Feeling taller can be an interesting side observation.

It should not become the clinical target.
