Weather & Wellness: Why You Might Feel Stiffer on Cooler Days
A cold morning arrives in Windsor and Essex County, and suddenly your knees feel more noticeable when you get out of bed.
Your back takes longer to loosen up.
Your hands feel stiff.
You may even say, “I could tell the weather was changing before I checked the forecast.”
Many people report exactly this experience.
The scientific evidence is less certain.
Some studies suggest lower temperatures, humidity, or barometric pressure can influence osteoarthritis symptoms in certain people. Other high-quality studies find no meaningful relationship between weather and common musculoskeletal pain.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated more than 28,000 pain events and found no association between temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, or precipitation and rheumatoid arthritis, knee pain, hip pain, or low back pain. (PubMed)
A different osteoarthritis meta-analysis did find associations involving temperature and barometric pressure. (PubMed)
The useful conclusion is not that weather definitely causes joint pain or that people are imagining it.
It is that weather sensitivity appears to vary, and the effect is probably smaller and more complicated than common explanations suggest.
Why Do So Many People Feel Weather-Sensitive?
Weather-related pain is widely reported.
In one European study, 67.2% of older adults with osteoarthritis said they believed weather influenced their joint pain. (PubMed)
That makes the experience worth taking seriously.
It does not mean the mechanism has been established.
When weather changes, several things often change at the same time:
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Barometric pressure
- Sunlight
- Physical activity
- Time spent outdoors
- Clothing
- Driving habits
- Mood
- Sleep
- Seasonal routines
Trying to isolate one variable is difficult.
That helps explain why studies repeatedly reach different conclusions.
What Does The Best Recent Research Say?
A 2024 systematic review specifically looked at transient weather exposure and musculoskeletal pain flares.
Across more than 15,000 participants, researchers found no evidence that rainfall, humidity, atmospheric pressure, or temperature increased the risk of rheumatoid arthritis pain, knee pain, hip pain, or low back pain. (PubMed)
That is important evidence against the idea that a drop in temperature reliably causes musculoskeletal pain.
But it does not close the question entirely.
A 2023 osteoarthritis meta-analysis found lower temperatures and higher barometric pressure associated with greater osteoarthritis pain. (PubMed)
A study of 810 older adults with osteoarthritis also found small associations involving humidity, particularly during colder weather. (PubMed)
Weather-related symptoms may therefore be more relevant for certain patients or diagnoses than others.
Newer Hand Arthritis Research Adds More Uncertainty
A 2025 study involving 377 people with hand osteoarthritis evaluated temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, pain, stiffness, and function.
Researchers did not find a clear relationship between weather variables and overall pain, stiffness, or functional limitation. (PubMed)
That is a good example of why a patient can sincerely report weather sensitivity even though researchers struggle to detect a consistent population-wide effect.
Pain is highly individual.
The same temperature change may be noticeable to one person and irrelevant to another.
Cold Weather Does Not Mean Your Joints Are Being Damaged
This is one of the most important takeaways.
Even if cold weather influences how a joint feels, that does not mean the weather is accelerating structural damage.
A stiff knee on a January morning is not necessarily deteriorating faster than the same knee in July.
The same applies to your spine.
A cold day does not make degenerative disc disease suddenly progress.
It does not shift vertebrae out of place.
It does not mean your arthritis has become structurally worse overnight.
Symptoms can fluctuate much faster than anatomy changes.
Being Physically Cold Can Affect How Muscles Perform
Temperature still affects physiology.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis found that increasing muscle temperature improved rate-dependent muscle properties such as rapid force production and power, while maximum force was largely unchanged. (PubMed)
This can help explain why moving vigorously immediately after becoming cold may feel different from performing the same activity after warming up.
The effect should not be exaggerated.
Your muscles have not become damaged because you stepped outside in winter.
They may simply perform differently until your body warms.
Your Winter Routine May Matter More Than The Weather
For many people, colder weather changes behaviour.
You may walk less.
A recreational sport stops for the season.
You drive somewhere you would normally walk.
You spend evenings indoors.
You sit for longer stretches.
Your weekend activities change.
Then January arrives and your body feels “stiffer.”
Weather may be part of the experience, but reduced movement and changes in physical demand may also matter.
This gives you something practical to change.
Keep Moving When The Temperature Drops
You do not need to force yourself through a painful workout because exercise is supposed to be healthy.
You also do not need to stop moving because your joints feel stiff.
Try maintaining regular activity in forms that fit the season.
That might include:
- Indoor walking
- Resistance training
- An exercise class
- A home exercise routine
- Swimming
- Stationary cycling
- Short outdoor walks with appropriate clothing
- Regular movement breaks during work
Consistency matters more than whether the activity looks impressive.
If you normally become much less active during winter, maintaining even part of your warmer-weather routine can help preserve strength and conditioning.
Warm Up Before Demanding Activity
Imagine spending the morning indoors and then immediately going outside to shovel heavy snow.
That is a substantial jump in physical demand.
A gradual warm-up can make more sense.

Before more strenuous activity, try:
- Walking for several minutes.
- Moving through comfortable ranges at the hips, knees, shoulders, and spine.
- Practising a few easier repetitions of the task.
- Increasing intensity gradually.
For snow shovelling, that might mean starting with smaller amounts rather than attacking the heaviest pile first.
You Do Not Need To Stretch Every Time You Feel Stiff
“Stiff” and “needs stretching” are not synonyms.
Stretching can temporarily improve range of motion.
So can several other warm-up activities.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found no meaningful superiority of stretching or foam rolling compared with other warm-up interventions for acute changes in range of motion or stiffness. (PubMed)
If stretching feels good, use it.
If walking for five minutes makes you feel equally loose, that works too.
Your routine should be practical enough to repeat.
Can Heat Help?
Heat can be useful for temporary comfort.
For acute or subacute low back pain, the American College of Physicians recommends superficial heat as one non-drug option supported by moderate-quality evidence. (PubMed)
A Cochrane review found modest short-term reductions in pain and disability from heat wraps in selected people with acute and subacute low back pain. (PubMed)
Heat may also temporarily increase range of motion. A systematic review of thermal interventions found evidence that heat increased ROM and could enhance some stretching-related improvements. (PubMed)
Possible options include:
- A warm shower
- A heating pad
- A heat wrap
- Warm clothing before outdoor activity
Use heat for comfort.
Do not interpret temporary relief as evidence that heat reversed arthritis or repaired a joint.
What About Keeping Your Joints Warm?
If gloves, layers, or warmer clothing make movement more comfortable, there is little reason not to use them.
The benefit may simply be comfort.
There is no need to claim that covering the joint improves “circulation” enough to heal arthritis.
Warm clothing can help maintain thermal comfort and make you more willing to move.
That alone can be worthwhile.
Hydration Is Still Useful, But It Is Not A Weather-Pain Treatment
People sometimes hear that dehydration is why joints become stiff in winter.
That explanation is too broad.
Normal hydration is important for health and physical activity.
There is not strong evidence that drinking extra water prevents cold-weather joint pain.
Drink according to your normal needs and increase fluids appropriately with exercise, sweating, illness, or other relevant circumstances.
You do not need a special winter water prescription for your joints.
Does Barometric Pressure Affect Your Joints?
Possibly, but the evidence is inconsistent.
The 2023 osteoarthritis meta-analysis found a positive correlation between barometric pressure and pain. (PubMed)
Other research has found little or no overall relationship.
The 2024 case-crossover meta-analysis found no association between atmospheric pressure and several common musculoskeletal pain outcomes. (PubMed)
This is why there is no clinically useful barometric-pressure threshold that tells every patient when they will hurt.
Pain Is Affected By More Than Tissue And Weather
Pain is not a simple weather sensor.
For someone with osteoarthritis, daily pain may also vary with:
- Fatigue
- Stress
- Mood
- Sleep
- Activity
- Social factors
- Joint stiffness
A 2024 study tracking knee osteoarthritis symptoms throughout daily life found substantial individual variation and relationships between pain and factors including fatigue, stress, anxiety, negative mood, loneliness, and stiffness. (PubMed)
This does not mean arthritis pain is psychological.
It means pain occurs within an entire person whose physiology, environment, activity, and experiences are changing constantly.
Try Tracking The Pattern
If your symptoms seem highly weather-dependent, record them for several weeks.
Write down:
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Activity
- Exercise
- Sleep
- Stress
- Work demands
- Medication changes
- Weather conditions
You may confirm that colder weather reliably corresponds with worse symptoms.
You may also notice something else.
Maybe your worst days come after long periods of sitting.
Maybe activity falls substantially when the temperature drops.
Maybe stiffness is worse after poor sleep regardless of the weather.
A simple pattern can be more useful than guessing.
When “Weather Pain” Deserves A Closer Look
Do not use weather as an explanation for every new symptom.
Arrange an assessment when stiffness or joint pain becomes:
- Progressively worse
- Persistent rather than episodic
- Associated with visible swelling
- Accompanied by warmth or redness
- Associated with significant weakness
- Accompanied by numbness or tingling
- Associated with fever
- Present after significant trauma
- Severe enough to substantially change normal activity
A new inflammatory, neurological, or traumatic problem deserves appropriate evaluation even if it happened to begin during a cold week.
Does Winter Mean You Need More Adjustments?
No.
Weather should not determine chiropractic treatment frequency.
If you feel slightly stiffer on cold mornings but remain active and functional, treatment may not be necessary.
If you have a recurring neck, back, or joint problem that is restricting normal activity, chiropractic care may be considered based on that diagnosis and your clinical findings.
The goal should be treating a musculoskeletal problem.
Not treating winter.
